Anybody remember Rogue? Great little game with ASCII graphics (your character was a smiley face, monsters were some letter of the alphabet e.g. b=bat, D=dragon, etc, etc)

Anyway there is a fantastic little game called Dwarf Fortress out there with similar graphics, but the gameplay is quite similar to Dungeon Keeper with some vaguely Sims-like dwarf management. It's actually quite deep and involved, and can take a long time to learn how to play.

Here are some of the things you can do:
- Assign each dwarf some set of tasks they'll do, which they'll gain experience in and improve (mining, carpentry, jewel-setting)
- Build up a military with training areas, equipping dwarves with equipment you made yourself or bought from traders which occasionally visit
- Build bedrooms, dining rooms, offices, catering to the needs of your dwarves
- Build traps, trebuchets, or levers which (if you've engineered them correctly) will flood an area with water or lava
- Watch your dwarves go on insane murdering rampages if enough bad things happen to them to drive them to the edge

Game can be downloaded for free from here: http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/

Some guys started a succession game on a forum where each player took over for a year, then zipped up his save and sent it to the next guy to continue. Hilarity ensues. Here is the saga of the dwarf fortress: Boatmurdered. The beginning of the end really starts in chapter 18 with this line "I've started project "F*** The World", a top secret attempt to funnel magma to the outside. I'll kill those elephants. I'll kill all those f***ing elephants."

Can't really afford to spend hours cooking right now.

I hope it's a good year for everybody - good decade even, though doesn't the decade officially start in 2011 and not 2010? It's going to be a busy time for us, and we're looking forward to our daughter getting a bit bigger. This time next year she might be able to get excited about Christmas for real. Can't wait.

Then on the morning of the 13th the waters broke and then a day and a half later the size of my family went from 2 to 3, that's a big step up.

Since then we've been learning as fast as we can, Bing has been great and is picking everything up very quickly. I'm doing my best but it's not easy! We're both pretty tired right now since Sonja does like to have a lot of attention :P

Yes as part of Movember I've shaven that crappy facial hair I had on, in order to grow a magnificent 'stache in the next 30 days or so, all in the name of prostate cancer awareness & research. A few guys I work with have formed a team 'BBC Forge Mos', so if the mood strikes you you can donate towards the cause. Make sure you 'donate to dave' and not to the team! Both will go towards our team but clicking 'donate to team' donates it under the team leader's name and makes him look awesome instead of me :(

UPDATE 30/11: This is the best I could do in 3 and a half weeks! Our team raised about £800 which is pretty good (I only raise £31 in total, of which £21 was me donating to myself so I could beat the guy who had £20)

Wow, an online petition actually worked! Granted it was for little more than a public apology but still... A while back I saw a link to sign a petition for the British government to apologise for the treatment of Alan Turing which I happily signed. Alan did some fairly seminal work in the fields of computer science and artificial intelligence and was a major contributor to the code-breaking efforts at Bletchley Path during World War 2, helping to decrypt messages coded by German Enigma machines.

Basically, an important guy to us geeks. Unfortunately for him, he was gay in an age where homosexuality was illegal. After the war, in 1952 he was charged with gross indecency, his security clearance was removed so could no longer continue his cryptographic work. He was also subject to 'chemical castration' which is essentially being treated with female hormones meant to reduce libido. 2 years after being convicted, he committed suicide.

Then this morning I got a mail giving an update, and Gordon Brown has issued a written statement apologising on behalf of the British government for the tragic treatment of a person like this.

Well I've just finished my jury service... I'm sorry to see the end of it to be honest. Now it's back to my stressful day job trying to keep parts of bbc.co.uk online. What's doubly stressful is that I never knew I would be away for so long and it's at a critical time where I just couldn't afford to be away. Ah well, s**t happens.

It started with a letter about 2 months ago asking (ordering) me to do it. At first I thought I was being called in for a single trial probably only lasting a few days (not knowing how these things work). I accepted of course, anything else without a really valid reason is a criminal offence. The moment got closer and finally the night before, and after carefully reading the letter, I discovered it was for a full two weeks! It's also possible that you'll get called into more than one trial.

So I got in, and a lot of the first day involved sitting around waiting to be assigned to a trial. I very narrowly avoided a 4 week trial. Normally they call 15 people up and choose 12, this is to allow for any reasons why a particular person shouldn't be a part of that jury. In this case because of the length they called nearly 40 of us in - and people were given a chance to decline saying they had important things to do e.g. a pre-booked holiday, medical appointment. Oh boy were the excuses flying thick and fast. Some were accepted but some not. Luckily my name didn't get called so I shuffled back downstairs.

Finally I did get assigned to a trial involving a number of defendants, all with separate barristers and all having to go through interpreters. As it turns out what should have been a 3/4 day trial turned into two and a half weeks. Now a lot of people complain about jury service because they get assigned to a lousy trial. Of the two people I spoke to who actually did it, one was in a trial for a dog who bit a bailiff, the other was for some thugs having a fight in the street. I think I got lucky because mine turned out to be pretty interesting.

The two weeks came and went. Evidence was given, witnesses and defendants said what they had to say. It's pretty hard concentrating for 5 hours a day but this is obviously very important to the people being tried, and you just have to do your best. The decision you have to make can ruin somebody's life if you get it wrong so you do owe it to them.

The time came to give our verdicts. They'd locked us in a room and we'd carefully discussed them, after we went back in one guy (not me) stood up to deliver it. This is done with a few simple yes/no questions by the clerk of the court and not like the movies "We the jury find the defendant...". The clerk would ask 'Have you reached a verdict?", "Was it unanimous?", then for each person "Do you find X guilty or not guilty?" You could absolutely cut the tension in the air with a knife by that point. As each person's verdict was given, you could just sense their feelings as their lives were ruined or saved by what you'd just decided, one defendant was practically in tears. I have to admit I was feeling pretty emotional at that point. Judging by their reactions though I think we made the right choice. We certainly did according to the evidence but you still lie awake at night wondering about it. At least you share the burden with 11 other people which helps.

Anyway, I thoroughly enjoyed the experience and would recommend it to anybody if you approach it in the right frame of mind (and you don't get put on a thoroughly pointless or boring trial) It's an important part of being a citizen and feels good to perform a civic duty like this, helping the justice system to work in the way you think it should.

So a few years ago I started entertaining the notion that the world was in big trouble. Okay I was helped along and let me leave it at that. You know the story - oil oil oil. With the huge oil price spike we saw a while ago and the crushing recession that was to follow - all driven by some pretty far out economic policies and greedy people in banking and government... it seemed like as good a time as any to get moving.

So I sent in my Expression of Interest the the New Zealand Immigration people about 6 months ago which they accepted, and I've been collecting paperwork since then. The hardest thing by far was the South African police clearance certificate. My goodness did that drag and drag. Nearly 3 months from start to finish. The final straw came when the couriers tried to deliver it to the wrong address, and then didn't do anything fo 2 weeks while we waited around.

Well the good news is that I've sent everything in! Yes the official application is in and now we sit tight and wait. I'm not expecting to be turned down - me and Bing are surely just the type of people they want there. Well educated, employed / employable young couple wanting to settle down.

So as much as I enjoy working here at the BBC, and I've met a lot of great people in this country some of who are now friends... it's time to settle down and from the beginning I never saw myself settling down here. In fact from the beginning I never really meant to stay in England. I was on my way to Canada but thought I'd start off by living in the UK for a year or two since I had a good friend who was already living in London. He left a long time ago and here I am :P It all turned out well though - I wouldn't have met Bing otherwise and who knows how my life would have turned out.

So if all goes to plan then in a little over a year we might very well be in New Zealand! Starting from scratch in a new country is always a bit painful but luckily I have my brother and his family, as well as an old friend already down there so it won't be totally from scratch.

More World of Warcraft news that nobody will care about ;) but our guild alliance had another first kill last night, and in a 25 man raid instance too. Makes me very proud! It's one of the more awkward fights in the game and we've tried for several nights before finally killing him. I took a little video of the end of the fight - unfortunately I forgot the beginning which is probably a lot more interesting to watch. You start off with Maulgar (the boss) and 4 of his friends, all which have to be controlled and then killed one by one. Very hectic! Unfortunately I died near the beginning of the fight - the only person to die :P

An expansion pack is coming soon for World of Warcraft, so there are one or two things I wanted to do before then. One of them is to get myself a netherdrake which I did! Took weeks of work, and even though lots of people also have them - they'll probably be removing the ability to get one once the expansion hits so I reckon it's now or never.

The other thing was to clear this one 10 man raid dungeon. It's the easiest raid instance in the game but our guild was a little behind because of various people joining and leaving over the year. Hard to make progress without a regular team! Anyway on Sunday we finally killed the final boss in the instance!! I got to do the tanking as well which I was very chuffed about:

One final thing, I recently got appointed as an officer in my guild which means I can help us go onto bigger and better things once the expansion hits!
