British Passport - the final chapter
I've got it!! I hold in my hands my British passport, after months of trouble, and over 7 years of living here.
It's largely thanks to Bing who kept encouraging me to go through the process, when my nature was telling me to do it later. I believe they've changed the process recently but this what I did:
- stayed for 4 years on an ancestry visa
- Applied for permanent residency (took 3 months)
- Booked, studied for and wrote the 'Life in the UK' test after being here for a minimum of 5 years (6 for me, because I'm lazy)
- Applied to South African embassy to keep my SA citizenship even though I'm applying for another
- Sent in my application which had to be countersigned by 2 UK citizens you've known for 2 years, 1 of which had to be in a specific set of 'recognised' professions e.g. Minister, Policeman, Doctor, etc. Luckily I know a guy who is a solicitor who helped me out.
- Booked and attended a citizenship ceremony - it was official at this point.
- Filled in my application for a first adult UK passport - took 3+ months because it ALSO has to be countersigned by somebody in a specific set of professions who I've known for 2 years, and the guy who'd helped me previously wasn't ever getting back to me. Luckily I managed to find a guy at my company who qualified.
- Had to book an interview to confirm some personal details in person (fraud prevention apparently, but I think they do it just to annoy you)
- Then finally, a few days ago, it arrived!!
It's finally over, sheesh.

Hey, congratulations.
My name is Toni and I went through the same process and got the passport. I even went further and changed/repaired my name after a slight mistake on my certificate.
Anyway, it is great news and a great relief.
I am trying to help people for free in passing the Life in the UK Test. Would you be kind enough and check if the tests are close to the one you passed.
I have passed the older version and I am not sure if it is similar to the second version.

Just goes to show - aanhou wen :) And for a self-confessed sloth, that's really something. Congratulations! And a beautiful document it is, begorrah. I suppose this means you're not allowed to say "lekker", "just now" and "robot" any more - rules is rules ;)
Hmm, I think I've actually stopped saying "just now". I should start using it again.
"Haven't you done it yet?"
"No, I already said I'd do it just now. Maybe in 15 minutes' time."
"Huh?"
Congratulations!
