Hooray! Finally after months of waiting and many hours of fretting, I got a happy surprise in the mail yesterday. An extended and very boring history of events leading up to this follows:
In January I applied for Indefinite Leave to Remain in the UK after living and working here for 4 years, and figured it would be a quick process. An Aussie guy I work with said his was completed and back in his hands in 2 and a half weeks. In addition when I sent off my application I got a letter the very next day (how did they do that?!?) saying they'd received it and they aim to complete 70% of all application within 3 weeks unless they complicated which means it could take up to 13, so I wasn't worried. After all, I'm a good citizen, I pay my taxes and I don't stir up and real trouble. Maybe the occasional bout of public urination or a few threatening words aimed at tube workers but nothing I've been caught for yet. I've been here the right number of years and I've been professionally employed the whole time, what could be more straightforward than that?
Three weeks went by, then 4 then 5, something was wrong I could feel it. I phoned them up to give them my new address and at the same time asked if there were any problems with my application. "It's still under consideration" I hear, which I think means it is in somebody's IN tray waiting to be found. Anyhow as time dragged on I got more and more nervous, and tried to think of anything I've done recently which could possibly affect my application but came up with a blank. Things came to a head 2 weeks ago because my company was going to send me on a training course in Paris and I needed my passport for travel, so I phoned them up again only to hear the same "It's still under consideration" The only thing I could do was to hope that my passport arrived in time for me to get a visa to France. I couldn't really hurry the home office and I couldn't get a temporary passport because you're not allowed to travel when you're in the middle of an application.
By lucky chance the course was cancelled by the company doing the training so we're scheduled to go on the next one - I would have been pretty upset to have missed that opportunity. As you may know I'm incredibly lazy and haven't really travelled to Europe the whole 4 years I've been here - shocking I know. A free trip to Paris is maybe just what I need to get me kick-started on the road to travel around more.
It's been a long and hard series of weeks so you can understand my jubilation when I got a package from the home office yesterday morning, incidentally sent to my old office address but luckily they'd forwarded it to me. (It was sent on the 29th, 10 days ago)
I opened it up like a child at Christmas, did a cursory check for angry letters saying "It's been denied because of ..." before I opened my passport and there it was, on the page following my Ancestry Visa, "UK Residence Permit... Valid until: INDEFINITE"
Numbers on picture altered, you never knowCongratulations!
I hope its in time for the Paris trip.
Congratulations! That must be a big worry off your mind :)
And now you will soon have a trip to Paris to look forward to as well!
When do you apply to become a full blown British citizen?
Posted by: Snoopy at April 11, 2005 6:42 AMThanks, thanks. Well the Paris trip has been postponed and I don't know when they'll have another one, but that one I'm definitely going to
In about 9 month's time I can apply for a British passport and then I can go through all this again, but worse!
Posted by: Dave at April 11, 2005 5:53 PMWho would have thought it would ever happen :) Pity about them sending the swine thing to the wrong address first - it's all a conspiracy, don't you know. Probably tied in with the deaths of J.F.Kennedy and Princess Diana ;) Anyway, 'n boer maak 'n plan, and now you have permission to stay - wonderful
Posted by: Mojo at April 11, 2005 6:50 PMBEFORE you apply for British citizenship you should apply for the retention of your South African citizenship...
Otherwise you will lose it automatically!
