In a secluded loft space deep within the arts district of downtown Los Angeles lies the newly renovated Mixmag Lab – serving as a proper home to house a who’s who list of world renowned DJ & selectors when they roll through town. Mixmag was gracious enough to get our team out on location for my first taste of their live mix sessions with none other than the Colombian-American legend Erick Morillo. 20 year owner of Subliminal Records, renowned producer/DJ and general New York underground house aficionado – he’s won 6 “Best House DJ / Best International DJ” awards and been nominated for 15  – the guy is well rounded and thoroughly experienced to say the very least.

But damn what a rad space they have for these live mixes (that they film & promptly post on their youtube channel for all to see), the acoustics were great and with beverage options provided by none other than our friends at Smirnoff Sound Collective – the vibe was authentic & massive indeed.

The set was meticulous and true to his style – spanning a casual hour and forty minutes, he strung together an exceptionally diverse and fluid sound holding the energy in just right place the whole session. Throwing out all types of deep, tech, and progressive house he clearly displayed his seemingly endless playbook – all the while looking good rocking a huge smile & 3D printed custom Gold V-Moda headphones. Having met or cracked every reasonable indicator of success within the industry since the beginning of his career – it was a pleasure to see such high level, technical mixing in such a user-friendly environment – thank you Mixmag for having us out and please do yourself a favor and see this guy close out in Ibiza this October should you be in the area. With a new single titled “I Want You” set to drop this upcoming month and a fresh album on the horizon for 2016 titled “Phoenix”, Morillo took full advantage of the lab and reminded all of us why he is one of the unarguable kings of house music.
