Since its inception in 2011, Monstercat has cemented its reputation as one of the most forward-thinking, bass music record labels in dance music. The Vancouver-based imprint chooses not to sign its artists to exclusivity deals, rather Monstercat signs artists to single release deals, allowing artists to retain their own copyrights. With releases by the likes of Krewella, Pegboard Nerds, Dzeko & Torres, amongst many more on the label, Monstercat has had a hand in elevating the careers of a number of dance music superstars. The Tampa-native, Varien, is a veteran producer on the Monstercat roster, and with an debut album due out on the label this year, he’s peeled back the curtain with “Aether & Light” to give us a glimpse of what to expect from the undeniably talented musician on his debut LP.

“Aether & Light” contains all of the cinematic elements of production that Varien has been known for, as the opening notes dive into a dark, brooding space before surfacing in furious fashion with swirling bass wobbles. In his own words about the track, Varien said, “‘Aether and Light’ was based on the idea of creation, and a deity-like figure creating a universe, and what that may sound like. Hence the drop is very heavy and pounding, like a blacksmith using his hammer.
